Description
Zirconium(IV) oxide is used as an additive in the production of piezoelectric crystals, in high-frequency induction coils and in ceramic glazes. It finds application as solid electrolyte in electrochromic devices and precursor to the electroceramic lead zirconate titanate (PZT), as insulator in transistors, as a thermal barrier coating in jet and diesel engines and as diamond simulant in jewelry. It is used in oxygen sensors, fuel cell membranes and in orthopaedic implants of hip joints. It is coated on silica gel surface and found to be used in the extraction of chromium from aqueous solutions at a pH of about 3.
